Cantate Domino Canticum Novum: Singing to God a New Song

DesertMonks2Recently, about 200 of the who’s who in the expertise of Liturgical & Sacred Music released a statement to mark the 50th anniversary of Musicam Sacram. They described the current circumstance of music serving the liturgy, the de-sensitizing of the sacred through the promulgation of the secular in the pretext of “progress”, and a “liturgical sloth” that has overcome many in leadership positions that restrain an earnest study and a recovery of the sacred traditions of music for the Mass.

It is an exhibition of the vice of “liturgical sloth” to refuse to sing the liturgy, to use “utility music” rather than sacred music, to refuse to educate oneself or others about the Church’s tradition and wishes, and to put little or no effort and resources into the building up of a sacred music program.
